Improving the quality of Market Harborough's rail service
The cycle-rack next to the booking office at Market Harborough station was recently moved up on to platform 1, such that bicycles using it are now out in all weathers rather than under cover. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of platform canopies at the station. We raised this with East Midlands Trains, who responded that in its previous location the cycle-rack was sometimes an obstruction and there had been occasions when people had been unable to collect their bikes when the station building was closed and locked. Though there are other cycle racks, including a small covered one further along the platform, EMT acknowledge that overall it is not ideal and are considering a 'cycle hub' at the station. This is a welcome idea which HRU will be exploring further with EMT.
There has been much coverage of the above-inflation potential rises in fares next January as a result of the national formula for regulated fares. Season tickets are already a major part of the cost of living for many commuters, especially when many people's incomes are not rising by similar amounts. We await the actual figures for Market Harborough's fares next year and hope they are reasonable and not at a level that could price people off the trains.
