Harborough rail users
Improving the quality of Market Harborough's rail service
Harborough Rail Users have for a long time sought better accessibility at Market Harborough station. Though some improvements have been made, such as the ramp from the car park to the northbound platform plus the recent enhancements to the booking office, the station has remained difficult for wheelchair users and others with mobility impairments to use. In particular, access to the southbound platform is primitive, with wheelchair users having to be wheeled over a barrow-crossing across the track to get to or from the platform. Hardly a suitable arrangement on an inter-city main line in the 21st century! (The helpfulness of the station staff is gratefully acknowledged, however.)
Good news came on 29th April 2014 with the announcement by the government that Market Harborough is one of 42 stations nationwide that will benefit from the Access for All programme of accessibility improvements. We in HRU await details of the exact scheme at our station plus the timing of the work. In the meantime, we welcome this long-awaited announcement. |
